Pathology

Emphysema is a chronic lung disease in which the alveoli are progressively destroyed, leading to loss of elastic recoil, air trapping, and difficulty exhaling.

Air spaces become enlarged.

It is one of the two major conditions under chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The other is chronic bronchitis.
